In 2006, he received the Washington Post-Children’s Book Guild Nonfiction Award for his body of work.

In 2010, as the Great Recession and eBook hysteria brought traditional publishing to a virtual standstill, Sneed launched Bucking Horse Books. In contrast to the get-rich-quick mentality that dominates big publishing, Bucking Horse Books publishes quality, original titles that represent American values and open children to the wonder of existence. These books have reached wide audiences and received honors such as the Green Prize for Sustainable Literature, the High Plains Book Award, the Eureka Nonfiction Book Award, the American Association for the Advancement of Science-Subaru Prize for Excellence in Science Books (finalist) and the Green Earth Book Award (finalist).

In addition to writing children’s books, Sneed has two entertaining adult books from Mountaineers Books: Warblers & Woodpeckers: A Father-Son Big Year of Birding and Birding for Boomers—And Everyone Else Brave Enough to Embrace the World’s Most Rewarding and Frustrating Activity (Fall, 2024). Sneed is a popular speaker, traveling around the country and overseas to visit schools, conduct writers’ workshops, and give professional development seminars.
